Central de Mercados

En el 2017, nos invitaron a formar parte del cadáver esquisto de (Not) Another Tower de Tatiana Bilbao. Esta torre formaría parte de la Biennale de Arquitectura de Chicago, MAKING NEW HISTORY. Nos pidieron que hiciéramos un mercado que surtiera a los demás habitantes de la torre... el contexto era un futuro radical.

Con nuestra profunda investigación de materiales y la urgencia de reducir las huellas ecológicas en las ciudades con rascacielos, decidimos presentar una maqueta especulativa en donde un mercado funcionara como centro de distribución, reciclaje y noticiero sobre lo consumido y regenerado ahí cada día.

Le llegarían a cada local comercial público o habitacional de la torre, los materiales por ductos internos. De la misma forma, recibiría la basura para volver a reciclarse y seguir con el ciclo de creación y destrucción material.

Para reciclar correctamente cada material, debía estar separado de la forma más eficiente cada uno. Después de nuestra investigación y exploración durante los talleres de INDICE DE MATERIALES nos dimos cuenta que no estábamos satisfechos con las categorías o separaciones de materiales que conocemos o las que estuvimos investigando.

Para identificar la categoría de los materiales vivos o bióticos así como la madera, el algodón o el cuero nos basamos en los reinos biológicos que conocemos desde la secundaria. Si queríamos tener información más específica, simplemente hacíamos una investigación de taxonomica para entender el linaje. Esto no era el caso para los materiales no-vivos o abióticos como la arcilla, el metal y el plástico.

Existen todo tipo de bibliotecas y archivos de materiales pero seguíamos buscando un orden o un mapa de los materiales del mundo. Decidimos hacer nuestra propia interpretación de orden.

Este proyecto nos dejó con un entendimiento interno de los ciclos y las conexiones en el mundo material. Plasticos, provenientes del petróleo, fueron en algún punto, energía de origen fosil y antes de eso, huesos del Reino Animal. Me imagino cuerpos de dinosaurious y otros ancestros descomponiéndose por miles de años por el núcleo de la tierra, para después ser extraída por refinerías y convertido en pellets. ¿Cómo habrán sido los seres que ahora son figuras de plástico de Central?

In 2017 we were invited to form part of the exquisite corpse that composed (Not) Another Tower by Tatiana Bilbao. This tower would form part of the Chicago Architecture Bienal, MAKING NEW HISTORY. We were asked to make the market that would stock up the habitants of the tower... the context was a radical future.

With our profound study of materials and the urgency to reduce our carbon waste in the cities with skyscrapers, we decided to present a speculative scale model where a market would serve as distribution, recycling, and news center, displaying what was consumed and regenerated there each day.

Every commerce, public space or household would receive the goods through internal ducts. In the same way, it would collect the trash be recycled to follow the process of material creation and destruction.

To recycle every material correctly, it should be separated in the most efficient way. After our study and exploration during the workshops of INDICE DE MATERIALES, we realized that we were not satisfied with the categories or separations of materials that we knew of nor with the ones we were finding.

To identify the category of the living or biotic material such as wood, cotton or leather, we based our knowledge on the biological kingdoms that we learned since Middle School. If we wanted to have more specific information, we simply made a taxonomic investigation to understand its lineage. This was not the case for the non-living or abiotic matter such as clay, metal and plastic.

There are plenty of libraries and archives of materials but we kept searching for and order or a map of the materials in the world. We decided to make our own interpretation of order.

This project left us with an inner understanding of cycles and  connections in the material world. Plastics, coming from Petroleum were in one point fossil fuels or decomposed bones from the Animalia Kingdom. I imagine bodies of dinosaurs and other ancestors decomposing for millions of years to the inner core of the earth, to then be extracted by refineries and made pellets. What were the beings like, them who are now tiny plastic figures of Central?
